The land has been in the same family for over 200 years. An ancestor of the
Campbell family bought the land from the Attakapas Indians in 1800. Chief
Tichot offered John Lyons "all the land that he could walk in a day".
It was a great-granddaughter of John Lyons, Mary Jane Lyons, who married
Calvin Campbell. The two met in an interesting way. Mary Jane had knitted
socks for the soldiers of the Civil War and wrote her name in a sock. Calvin
Campbell received Mary Jane's sock, located her, and they were married.
Calvin was an early-day pioneer farmer. He had the first threshing machine
and also the first irrigation plant for rice growing in Vermilion Parish.
Calvin and Mary Jane had a son named Hampton Campbell. Hampton and his wife,
Anna Kutch, bought the land from family descendents piece by piece which
makes up the farm today. He was the first farmer to use rubber-tired farming
machinery.
Hampton's son, Melchior, was also a progressive farmer and an enthusiastic
airplane pilot. He owned the Gueydan airport, which is now a rice field. He
was the first farmer to demonstrate aerial planting of rice which is the
primary method today. He was also the first to use a complete system of
fertilization consisting of nitrogen, phosphate and potash.
Hampton F. Campbell, named after his great-grandfather, Hampton, is now
farming the land. He has been farming rice since 1990. He began farming
gourmet rice in 1999. |
